The last of four individuals accused of escaping from an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility in Newark has been arrested and appeared in federal court. Andres Felipe Pineda Mogollon, 25, a Colombian national, was charged with escape from custody after being apprehended in Los Angeles on July 17, 2025. He made his initial appearance before United States Magistrate Judge Michael A. Hammer on August 18, 2025.

Three other individuals—Franklin Norberto Bautista Reyes, 20, of Honduras; Joan Sebastian Castaneda Lozada, 18, of Colombia; and Joel Enrrique Sandoval-Lopez, 22, of Honduras—were previously charged with the same offense. All four were detained at Delaney Hall in Newark while awaiting immigration removal proceedings.

According to case documents, the escape occurred on or about June 12, 2025. The detainees allegedly broke through an aluminum second-story wall at Delaney Hall. They reportedly dropped mattresses through the opening to cushion their jump and used bed sheets to cover barbed wire as they climbed over the fence.

Castaneda Lozada, Sandoval-Lopez, and Bautista Reyes were all apprehended in New Jersey between June 15 and June 16. Each defendant faces up to one year in prison and a $100,000 fine if convicted.

Acting U.S. Attorney Alina Habba stated: “Acting U.S. Attorney Habba credited special agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Stefanie Roddy in the Newark Field Office and Assistant Director in Charge Akil Davis in the Los Angeles Field Office; officers of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, under the direction of Acting Director Todd M. Lyons; and officers of Homeland Security Investigations, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Ricky Patel, with the investigation.”

Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael A. Hardin is representing the government as part of the Public Protection Task Force in Newark.

The complaint notes that all charges are accusations only and that each defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

Defense counsel for Pineda Mogollon is Stephen Turano.
