An Essex County man has been sentenced to over six years in prison for his involvement in drug trafficking and firearm possession. Azmar Carter, also known as “Bizzy,” aged 32, from East Orange, was sentenced on June 10, 2025, by U.S. District Judge Madeline Cox Arleo. Carter had previously pleaded guilty to charges related to the distribution and possession of cocaine and heroin, as well as possession of firearms.

The investigation into Carter’s activities began in 2021 when law enforcement agencies focused on a drug trafficking organization operating primarily around Orange, New Jersey. During the investigation, Carter distributed cocaine to law enforcement officers twice in mid-2021. A search conducted at his residence and vehicle led to the recovery of firearms, ammunition, narcotics, and cash.

In addition to his prison sentence, Carter will face three years of supervised release. The investigation was credited to several law enforcement agencies including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Orange Police Department, Elizabeth Police Department, East Orange Police Department, Newark Police Department, and Belleville Police Department.

This case is part of Operation Orange under the Newark Violent Crime Initiative (VCI), a collaborative effort formed in August 2017 involving federal and local agencies aimed at addressing violent crime in Newark and surrounding areas.

The prosecution was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Levin.

Defense counsel for Carter was Christopher D. Adams.
