The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office has opened an investigation into a fatal crash that took place around 6:00 p.m. on November 9, 2025, in West Deptford, Gloucester County.

According to officials, the incident occurred near Red Bank Avenue and Hessian Avenue. The crash followed an attempt by a West Deptford police officer to follow a vehicle whose driver then sped away and collided with another car. The civilian driver of the third vehicle died as a result of the collision.

Authorities report that the individual who caused the collision has been charged by the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office with death by auto and assault by auto. “The charges and allegations against the driver are merely accusations, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law,” officials stated. The prosecutor’s office continues its criminal investigation into these charges.

Under New Jersey law N.J.S.A. 52:17B-107(a)(2), any death occurring during an encounter with law enforcement must be investigated by the Attorney General’s Office. This statute also requires such cases to be presented to a grand jury to determine whether there is sufficient evidence for indictment of any officers involved.
